Geoff Annals Chief executive officer New Zealand Nurses Organization Kia-ora Geoff, As news spreads of the Israeli Defence Force attacks on Gaza it would be good to have a New Zealand Nurses Organization response generally condemning this. As a union concerned with the health and well-being of humanity and to add our voice to the world-wide union voice condemning these attacks on a civilian population, I believe that the New Zealand union response has been somewhat lacking. Many unions worldwide have condemned the attacks and stand in solidarity with the General Federation of Palestinian Trade Unions. These include the International Trade Union Congress, the Confederation of South African Trade Unions, the Australian Council of Trade Unions. In the absence of a co-ordinated response from the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions at least one other trade union, the Tertiary Education Union has already made a statement about the crisis. I don’t believe it should be the only one and that the New Zealand Nurses Organization should join the chorus of condemnation, even go as far to endorse the recently formed Boycott Israeli Goods campaign (see http://big.org.nz).
If needs be I would be willing to put a remit through the West Coast region along such lines so that due process can be followed, although I am sure you will appreciate that expediency on this matter is more important.
